The Future for Camp Nou
As of January 2014, Barcelona’s board of directors was approached with the idea of building a new stadium. The idea was turned down, and decided rather to remodel Camp Nou again to expand the seating capacity. The project is scheduled to start in 2017, and last until 2021. These redevelopment plans include a new ring of corporate boxes, resulting in 3,500 VIP seats and the creation of new improved media systems, and a line of restaurants. Summer of 2020 will have the old roof removed, and adding another tier of seats to the top to complete the bowl. There are no plans to rename the stadium, but the club has not ruled out the possibility of selling naming rights. Because the stadium will require roughly 8 years of time to be able to repay the cost, it seems more than probable that the stadium will adopt a corporate suffix. [1]
Slated to begin an expansion that will include a basketball arena, and various other installations estimated to cost roughly 600 million euros. Barca plans on taking out loans for 165 million pounds and selling naming rights of the stadium for the other 82.5 million. [2] The remaining amount is to be covered by employing existing funds. A new roof is going to be added to the stadium to accommodate for the addition of extra layers of seats at the top. The option of building a new stadium at a new site was rejected due to costing too much, which would leave the club in debt for too long of a period.
Camp Nou will remain in the same location, but will look vastly different inside and out. Proposal includes: “improved functionality, accessibility, mobility, sustainability, modernity and quality, designed to be at the service of the people, the neighborhood and the city. This new Camp Nou would include three main areas: the Camp Nou itself, a new Palau Blaugrana for 10,000 spectators and the Espai Barça (Barça Space), which would involve buildings for different purposes integrated into the district”. [1] The plans also include for the establishment of a perimeter ring to allow for ease of access between the different sections. Extra services, cleaning and public conveniences will be added as well. The new Camp Nou should in summary, have more facilities, better signage and will also be more accommodating for disabled viewers.
